Since Mew is out hunting at the moment I thought I would write this review myself based on what he has told me about this new food that he has tried.
His food mainly consists of dry kibbles – his favourite is Applaws – and the occasional tin of wet food for a change. The wet food he loves is Gourmet Gold Chunks in Gravy which is the one that he told you all about recently.
A couple of weeks ago I needed to order some cat litter for Mew so I went along to Pet Supermarket (going via Quidco of course) to get the best price. I ordered two bags of Catsan which came to £26.98 and since free delivery usually starts at £27 I took at look at some of the other stuff they had for cats.
I saw that the little cans of Applaws wet food were on offer and, although they were still more than I usually pay for wet food, I decided to try one of each partly to make sure that I didn’t have to pay for postage and partly to see if Mew liked them.
The three flavours that I bought were tuna fillet and prawn, chicken breast and cheese and ocean fish. The two fish based ones cost 85p each and the chicken one was 78p. As I say this is about twice what I normally pay for wet food but I know that Applaws is one of the best makes so I was prepared to give it a try. The usual price is around £1.35 a tin.
Mew saw the tins when I unpacked the parcel and he knew exactly what they were so he went into super cute mode – rubbing against my legs, purring, giving a little meow – you cat owners out there know the drill! I decided to give him one of the tins to try and chose the tuna fillet and prawn to start with.
The little can contained 70g of cat food (as compared to 85g in the Gourmet Gold) and opens by means of a ring pull on the top. As soon as I opened it there was a lovely smell of fish – I remember the days when cat food used to smell revolting! The food looked appetising too which is a bonus as Mew doesn’t like sloppy food. This one had proper chunks of fish and I could see the little prawns in there too.
Even though the can is quite small I still gave Mew just half a can at a time as he tends to eat wet food very quickly and the contents of a full can has been known to make him sick.
Well he definitely gave a ‘paws up’ to this one – he loved it and was licking his lips for ages afterwards to make sure that he didn’t miss a tiny scrap of the food. The purr level was very high too!
On the side of the tin it says that the ingredients of this food are ‘tuna white meat 52%, prawn 23%, rice 1% and cooking water 24%’ so it is an excellent product with no additives. It also says that two 70g tins per day would be enough to feed an average sized cat. If I chose to feed this to Mew as his main food that would cost me £2.70 per day or £18.90 per week which is way out of my price range at the moment!
Once the can is empty I just wash it out and throw it into the recycling bag ready for the weekly collection.
I have since given Mew the can of chicken breast and cheese but he isn’t impressed with that one at all and most of it remains in his dish so I won’t be buying that one again!
Given the high price of this food I may well buy it occasionally when I see it on offer somewhere but I will be sticking to Gourmet Gold and the Sheba domes for his regular wet food as he loves those.
Summary: I may buy this again when I see it on offer
